The Challenge

Every city hides more than its algorithm shows.

Mainstream recommendation platforms optimize for volume and sponsored content — not authenticity. The places locals actually love, the experiences only residents know about, the hidden gems that define a neighborhood's real character — they don't surface in a Yelp search.

Local Nuggets was born from a simple observation: the best recommendations still come from people, not platforms. The challenge was building a product that captures that intimacy at scale — without losing the human element that makes it valuable in the first place.

The Approach

Community-curated. Genuinely local.

The design strategy centered on trust and identity. Users build a local profile — neighborhood, lifestyle, interests — that contextualizes every recommendation they give and receive. Discovery is driven by people you know, not algorithms you don't.

Every UX decision was made to reduce the effort of sharing and increase the quality of discovery. Saving a favorite spot should feel as natural as texting a friend about it.

Research Insights

Three truths that shaped the product.

Trust is earned through proximity

Users trust recommendations from neighbors and local friends exponentially more than strangers — even verified ones. The social graph needed to reflect geographic reality.

Discovery is contextual

A great café for a Sunday morning isn't the same as a great café for a Monday work session. Recommendations needed to carry context, not just ratings.

Saving is sharing

Users treat favorited places as a personal collection they want to share. The favorites experience needed to be as shareable as it was personal — a portfolio of local taste.

Process

From insight to interface.

01

Discovery & Mapping

User interviews across three cities, competitive analysis of 12 discovery apps, and behavioral mapping of how people actually share local recommendations in real life.

02

Architecture & Flow

Information architecture centered on three core actions: Explore (browse by others), Save (build your collection), and Share (recommend to your network). Simple, deliberate, repeatable.

03

Visual Design & Testing

High-fidelity UI with warm, approachable visual language — designed to feel like a local recommendation, not a corporate directory. Three rounds of usability testing refined the core flows.

The Design

AI Powered — An app that feels like a local friend.

The UI centers on real-time AI agent interaction and intelligent, preference-driven discovery — delivering a genuinely personalized local guide that adapts to each user's taste, context, and neighborhood. Instead of static search, every session feels like asking the right person for the right recommendation at the right moment.

Additional Screens for Brand Identity

Built for the neighborhood.

Local Nuggets delivered a product experience that genuinely differentiates from aggregator platforms — putting community, trust, and context at the center of discovery. The visual system is warm, the flows are intuitive, and the social layer creates the kind of engagement that sustains a community product long-term.
